The European Commission has decided to register a European citizens 'initiative called' ReturnthePlastics: a citizens 'initiative to set up an EU-wide deposit system for recycling plastic bottles'.
The organizers of the initiative call on the Commission to come forward with a proposal to -
- set up an EU-wide deposit system for recycling plastic bottles;
- encourage all EU Member States to ensure that supermarkets (chains) that sell plastic bottles install bottle collection devices for recycling;
- charge plastic bottle companies with “plastic” taxes for recycling and the plastic bottle deposit system (under the polluter pays principle).
The Commission considers this initiative to be legally admissible as it fulfills the necessary conditions, but at this stage it has not yet analyzed the initiative in substance.
