Modifying waste water management

 

 

Modified electrodialysis (MED) has been developed for obtaining a more efficient breakup and density of ions in water solution from a dilute process stream. This technique is specifically designed for industrial metal ion containing waste solutions.

Industries across Europe are constantly faced with requirements for optimised wastewater management. This includes less concentrated limits for various pollutants. However, the methods wastewater clean-up companies currently use are falling short. The focus for environmental regulation has shifted away from emission reduction and towards a combination of Modified Electrodialysis (MED) and 3-dimensional cathode cells. This is for the prevention of metal waste from industrial effluents in order to reach zero discharge.

The way it works is that an ion exchange resin is integrated into the feed section to increase the transport of the metal ions relative to protons. This, in turn, improves the current efficiency at low concentrations as compared to conventional electrodialysis. Laboratory trials have proven successful showing the capability of the techniques on a small scale.

Furthermore, a pilot plant has been designed - integrating the 3D cathode unit and an ITP sensor. The pilot plant has been approved on industrial user sites in Belgium and is going through industrial trials.
