The main campus of University College Dublin is situated
at Belfield - a 132 hectare site, 4 km south of the centre
of Dublin city.
This campus is an attractively landscaped complex of modern
architectural buildings, accommodating most of the Faculties
of the University - as well as its student residences and
numerous leisure and sporting facilities.
Other University buildings include Earlsfort Terrace, adjacent
to St Stephen’s Green in the city centre.
The UCD Smurfit School of Business is located on
the campus at Blackrock - and, in Lyons Estate, Kildare, the Faculty
of Agri-Food and the Environment runs a research farm.
Continuing Professional Education (CPE)
Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is the centre of excellence
for professional teaching and learning at UCD.
In this regard there are 4 strategic objectives -
- To develop new programmes reflecting innovative development
- To increase the number and range of programmes.
- To increase the number of students and the quality of their
- To improve strategic partnerships with academic, industry, business
and professional bodies - nationally and internationally.
CPE offers professional development education - which is focused
on satisfying the learning needs of professionals - and provides
the latest thinking and theory in specialist areas, including best
practices and practical guidance for the implementation of EU directives.
The uniqueness of the CPE courses is the combination of a professional
qualification with university accreditation - in areas often supported
or driven by European legislation.
CPE manages the design, delivery and promotion of courses - which
are directed by UCD and external academics and experts - and works
closely with individual organisations, industry sectors and professional
bodies in developing programmes. The Centre is a leader in its field,
using innovative technology and flexible learning methods to deliver
these programmes and has delivered health and safety training by
satellite to sites around the country for the past ten years.
Typically, CPE students are graduates returning after a number
of years in practice to fast-track up-skilling and/or career
They are professionals who are trying to deal with planned
change and emergent change and they are preparing themselves
to deal with these events by up-skilling.
In the new professional paradigm, personal development and
organisational learning must be addressed coherently.
Career shifts for professionals require them to fine-tune their
expertise in a particular area. Currently, there are approximately
1,000 students enrolled in accredited Continuing Professional Education
courses. Students are awarded certificates, diplomas, bachelor or
master degrees across many broad areas, including -
