Institute of Technology, Sligo was the first third level
College to offer courses in the environmental area.
The three-year National Diploma in Environmental Science
has been running since 1975 and is a three year ab initio
course - or a one year add-on post certificate course.
The B.Sc. (Hons) in Environmental Science and Technology
was established in 1982 and is a four year ab initio course
with the possibility of holders with a relevant diploma joining
at year 3 or 4.

It has a five month co-operative education programme
(work placement) between the third and fourth year of the course.
The emphasis of the course is on waste and resource management and
on environmental legislation and management.
IT Sligo also offers a one-year add-on degree in
Environmental Chemistry to holders of relevant Diplomas in Applied
Science.
With regard to continuing education, a Graduate Diploma
in Environmental Protection by distance learning has been running
since 1989. It is aimed at science and engineering graduates who
have environmental responsibilities, but who lack formal environmental
training. It comprises five subjects over two years which may be
taken over an extended period to suit the course participant. There
is an option to progress to a M.Sc. in Environmental Protection,
which is a one year distance learning course available to holders
of the Graduate Diploma. The main component is a dissertation, which
may be work-based.
