Nearly three decades after the world banned chemicals
that were destroying the atmosphere’s protective
ozone layer, signs
of recovery have been welcomed by Irish
scientists.
Ireland is "remarkably" prone to droughts and
there is a "high likelihood they will occur again",
despite the storms and extreme rainfall experienced
in recent years.
The UK government won high praise six months
ago for taking a leading role in the successful
Paris climate change agreement, the first legally
binding commitment on curbing carbon emissions
by all 195 United Nations countries.
Norway has become the first industrialised nation
to formally ratify the Paris Agreement, after
its ambassador Geir Pederson deposited its "instrument
of ratification" to the UN's climate change Secretariat
last week.
On 22 June 2016, Energy Union Vice-President
Maroš Šefcovic and Michael R. Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General’s
Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change and
founder of Bloomberg LP, announced the launch
of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate &
Energy in Brussels.
